Her Cat Died. Should I Press the LIKE Button?

How Mean Is That Like Button at Facebook?
Facebook can be weird and creepy. Hours ago, someone typed in her status " MY cat died, I am so heartbroken. I did all i can.. now I'll miss Maxy.. blah blah blah". I wanted to show my sympathy for this poor animal lover who lost her cat BUT should I click the LIKE button to do so? I felt that if I did that it could also be misconstrued as being nasty and wanting her cat to die. On the other hand if I do NOT click the LIKE button, she may take it to mean that I do not empathize with her feeling sad because her pet died. I was trying to figure out how to get away with not having to write a short condolence note because I am lazy, and what can you say anyone to one whose pet has died? Okay, PRESS BUTTON. LIKE. Ooops... after a second I change my mind and wonder WHY should I like a status like that? When my dog went to doggie-paradise , I felt so bad, I couldn't eat a week and I had the lousiest Christmas season. Now why would I press the LIKE button? Thus, I "unliked" it and decided that a something like "I feel your pain would be adequate and sincere enough."
I wondered about all those LIKE that people seem to.. well.. "like". There were pictures of women being beaten badly in religious fanatical country and people were LIKING it. Then, there are status that say "HI, I am eating ice cream..." and people were LIKING it. Even the one word status like "PISSED" were being LIKED. It made me wonder about the rationale of the Facebook LIKE button. Do we really LIKE it or we press the LIKE button so we show that we approve of one's FB status? If this is the case, then we might as well LIKE everything right and have peace in our virtual world. Then there are those who LIKE quotations-- which is alright really, except that it isn't original. It's like our virtual life is filled with mushy affections that we have to LIKE everything and I don't understand that.
Maybe it's the whole psychology of our individual virtual world? We wish that everything were perfect and likeable and lovable so we affirm everything as OK by with a click of the mouse. But the real world isn't that way and though we want to think it's as easy as that, there is REALITY that tells us that everything is not likable..... in fact, most things aren't. Or maybe I have such a negative view of my individual reality that I am incapable of involvement in some virtual life that is perfect because it doesn't exist.
Sure I'd LIKE any status that would say " I found the Cancer or AIDS cure!". Or "Today, I discovered that Shangrila does exist and I am on my way there!". Or "I have been enjoying this new application that entertains me while I learn more about the tigers in Africa!". Don't misunderstand me, I have LIKED a lot of Ben Stiller's parent's videos at Facebook because they are delightfully funny. I also have LIKED really good poetry and original jokes and drawings and even great photos. But c'mon, one liners like "ice cream!"? Why would I press the LIKE button?
Thus the LIKE button is still a mystery to me. I hope there were three buttons - LIKE, UNLIKE and UNCERTAIN. Of course, that would mean most people would probably still click the LIKE button but when one is in doubt, there is the UNCERTAIN button like in the case of the FB buddy who posted about her dead cat. It makes me wonder if we have to LIKE everything, even the UNLIKEABLE simply to join the ranks of those who want to affirm that everything is alright in their own virtual world.
Maybe it's an invitation to LIKE everything? I don't know. There must be some "sense" in it that I haven't figured out YET. Have you?

@Lasko, I think the problem is that too many people are humorless and they take their FB so seriously and actually LIVE on their FB when they could be living on their You Tube instead (lol!) and end up with nice music and not killing anyone. How about we guys come up with a knowck-off Facebook with all these great suggestions? Hello Hubpages you listening? It was OUR idea okie? lol!
... i remember a case here in my country when a journalist was shot and killed. than the news passed through some Facebook page and guess what? it had almost 2000 "likes". OMG i said are we really that king of people? Facebook have to change that "like" option somehow, or to implement more mood options or a dont know. anyway, thanks for the hub debugs
Hey, it worked for the first guy! LoL
@Joni, thanks, I've really found it creepy to press the LIKE button when there are videos like that one.. woman being stoned (there should be the I HATE IT button.. for extreme cases!)
@Gaizy, yep I agree.. I like your "I AM PISSED" button idea.. maybe we should come up with our own FB version.. could make us ALL rich!!!! Game anyone? lmao!
This is a fun Hub and a fun topic. @Gaizy, I like your solution, but I am for turning the "I'm Pissed" into a button as well. This way we would have something appropriate for the "Woman getting stoned" link.
@debugs, Thanks for great read. It made me chuckle, it made me think and it made me want to cancel my FB account! (kinda - not really) Hehe!
Voted UP and AWESOME!
I like the Idea of three buttons, but mine would be "like", "Empathise", and specially for the "I'm pissed" brigade, one that says "Oh grow up!"
I guess, even the creator of the Like button doesn't have the correct definition. I, like you, am lazy to write sometimes and use the Like rather than having to think about something to write. However, I only use Like with the means of Like. So, in this case, I will just keep mum rather than offending anyone. Great hub and it really makes people think!
@Rishword, imagine what would be of "world peace" if we all commented dislike? lmao! Hey, but THAT is an idea!
Wow...hahaha.. Nice topic u have chosen... It is directly connected to my day-to-day life, that is in fb..
when i find anything bad, i simply write 'dislike'...and i always wonder that there should be a button for it... Ha ha..
thanx for d nice hub..
@Wesman, I think FB needs US.. lol! They could change a lot of things there to make it less complicated and a bit more realistic :)
Exactly. I've had to clarify, "when I hit 'like,' surely you understand that I just mean that I appreciate the link"
@Wesman, one time there was a video of a woman being stoned to death and I had to TYPE, sorry I can't like this but I know you put it there so that we'd be aware.. lol!
hahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, the "like" button is fraught with peril!!!!!!!!!
@My Sci FI- neither have I, seems I find Twitter easier and less complication but as everybody keeps saying "everyone must have a Facebook".. or is this true?
I still haven't figured out Facebook to be honest! I'm a tech lover but putting my whole life online for everyone to see just doesn't make sense to me. :)
